It’s been real, it’s been fun but not real fun…actually it has been real fun. Check out the new blog already. Stop reading. Click here, no click here, no here, right here, click here, no here….

Houston livestock show and rodeo…

by Kyle Smith

Well the rodeo has come to an end, and like clock work the protesters helped bring it to a close. Last year their big beef was that Tejano day wasn’t Tejano enough. You know, I just don’t get why they think they can even complain. This isn’t life or death, the rodeo is for entertainment. It’s meant to be fun, a time to eat, drink and be merry. So just go and enjoy yourself. I can’t believe they’re actually trying to play the race game with the rodeo.

This year their complaint is the rodeo committee/board is not represented enough by all races. Well I may be wrong, but I’m pretty sure that members earn their way to their spots after years of service and donations. If I walked up and demanded to be on the board I’d be denied, but wait…I’m white, how can this be!?!? Maybe I should protest the rodeo because there’s not enough young/full of ideas/cool people on the board. It’s not fair that I actually have to work for something. I went to college, earned a degree…where’s my freebie?

I’m sure Tejano day came about only because someone protested, and why not have a Tejano day? But now should there be a Rap/Hip Hop day? Celtic day? Canadian day? Sushi day? I mean honestly, where will it end? Where’s “Indie Rock” day? Why can’t Wilco or Iron & Wine be an artist at the Rodeo? Why is it only country music? Oh wait… it’s a RODEO! Leave it be!!

I think the thing that dissapoints me the most is the main person being interviewed on the news was a state senator. Really?!? As an elected official you think it’s appropriate to picket events? Real classy. Very distinguished. Bringing a lot of honor and respect to the senate chamber. I’m glad my tax dollars are being put to good use.

There are black, white, hispanic, liberal, conservative, religious, and atheist cowboys and cowgirls at the rodeo and one thing they all have in common are cowboys hats, pearl snap shirts, cowboy boots, jeans, spurs, livestock, beer (or whiskey) and country music. That’s what the rodeo is actually about. The rodeo is for the cowboys and cowgirls, and it’s for the kids who earn scholarships. Who cares if the musicians are only black, white, mexican, austrailian, etc. on a certain night. Why are people trying to make it about themselves? You don’t see me frequenting local rap concerts, and guess what…I’m not offended that rap music isn’t catering to me, it shouldn’t. You don’t see me at Tejano concerts, and guess what…I’m glad Tejano is there for its culture to enjoy.

I think there would actually be an argument if all the voluteers, workers and entertainers at the rodeo were all WASP’s but they’re not. It’d be different if all the vendors were all card carrying KKK members, but they’re not. So the board is comprised of a bunch of old white country bumpkins, so what. Does this mean we should start picketing every business in America who’s CEO is white? black? asian? hispanic? Or is it only a problem if they’re white? I don’t get it.

Honestly, I really don’t get it. I thought we’re all supposed to be loving to one another, and accept all. But it always seems a little one sided.

This is the city’s big rodeo, so just go and eat a turkey leg, have a bud, listen to music and relax. If you don’t like the music then don’t go. If you don’t like cowboy hats, don’t wear one. It’s called a rodeo, so don’t act surprised when you get a rodeo.

Spring Break!

by Kyle Smith

The college will be on spring break next week so I will also be missing from the web. We don’t have internet at the house yet, so I can’t really access the web except via my Blackjack 2. I can update Twitter too so that should that should change throughout the next week. One thing to check out is I’m not sure when it will be available to all, but I’m on the waiting list. Google is taking over the world!
